Honestly the most interesting and poorly understood concept is probably that of “Presupposition”.
The history of ideas can really only be understood after one grasps what a presupposition is.
The realization that sometimes an idea is only meaningfully grounded after the acceptance of another idea is profound.
However, the trouble in there lies the fact that a proposition, a string of ideas can sometimes seem meaningful, even though when the ideas are traced, a contradiction is revealed.
This trouble, is the reason for almost all of the world’s problems. Philosophers have been making this error for 1000s of years and they then go onto promulgate ideas that get implemented by politicians. The politicians never having the capacity or want to integrate ideas properly are incapable of discerning how meaningfully grounded the implemented ideas are.
Then you have the modern academics that never having been thought the idea of presupposition spend their entire careers peddling bullshit from their ivory towers in the clouds, often visited by idea fairies, that make them believe anything in their oh so “internally consistent worldview” has much to do with reality. Sadly if they grounded their ideas, they’d soon realize that at the base of all of those abstractions was an improperly assessed contradiction that presupposed the rest of their system. With their inability to assess the presupposition they are left fancifully pretending all is well.
Alas, the problem doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. In fact it’s a bit of an involved problem to even see. Lots of vested parties would lose a bunch of money too.
It’s one of the sad things about “critical thinking skills”, people are told to think critically, but in reality, most people absorb viral ideas, and then defend them as if they were commanded by a power they can not refuse.
Imagine the next time some “elite” is telling you about their oh so great plan, just ask them, “Do you know what a presupposition is?” If not, I’d personally discount everything they’d said on principle.
You see if they don’t know what their ideas rely on, then how can you rely on their ideas?
